Lebenslauf:
Pedro Alvarez (Chile, 1980) is a composer mainly focused on the creation of contemporary chamber music that challenges traditional aesthetic ideals of processual fluency and development. Instead he aims at new forms of musical experience based on contemplative approaches to static ‘objectivised’ situations, radically contrasting brutal formal simplicity with highly detailed textures.
Alvarez initial studies encompassed the performance of Hindustani classical music, as well as a variety of Western instruments, before undertaking studies in Philosophy and Composition at Universidad de Chile (Licentiate and MA degrees). Later he moved to Britain to pursue further studies in composition: privately with James Dillon, MPhil at University of London, and PhD at University of Huddersfield with Liza Lim, where he also took editorial responsibility of issue 4 of the CeReNeM Journal (Centre for Research in New Music). Besides formal studies, he has actively participated in many composition seminars across Europe.
Widely performed by established specialised ensembles and a younger generation of exceptionally talented musicians, Pedro Alvarez's music has featured in festivals such as the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Connect Festival in Malmö, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, ME_MMIX in Mallorca, Platypus Marathon V in Vienna, ISCM World Music Days in Ghent and Lange Musik at Dampfzentrale in Bern, among others.
