tour.reg – Regional Project to Support Tourism Education and Training

In its first phase, the project focussed on the enhancement of practical training at the six vocational schools in Macedonia that offer hotel, catering and tourism education. The measures included in-service training for teachers, the promotion of cooperation among schools and the equipment of the training kitchens at two schools. The current phase (April 2010 to March 2011) focuses on the development of: occupational standards for cooks and waiters, a manual for business practices (including trainee contracts), quality indicators for the new practical training, enhanced cooperation with the business sector and revised curricula.
This project is funded by Austrian development Cooperation and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture.

Education for Sustainable Tourism Development

In two preliminary seminars, school principals and teachers from eight tourism schools were introduced to the subject of education for sustainable development, with a particular focus on sustainable tourism development. Assessments of the situation in Macedonia prepared by the participants served as a basis for awareness raising and for brainstorming to develop new teaching materials and ideas for class projects.
The sustainable development concept is now to be introduced at six tourism schools (Skopje, Tetovo, Kruševo, Gevgelija, Ohrid, Štip). This holistic concept includes in-service training for teachers, school psychologists, principals, municipal authorities and parents. The participants are to receive training in dealing with interculturality and diversity, and annual plans for education development are being drawn up with the approval of the municipalities and Macedonia’s Ministry of Education and Science and Bureau for Education Development. The project is taking place in the context of the strategy for integrative education that was adopted by the Ministry of Education and Science in October 2010.

German as a Foreign Language

Under the guidance of a local expert, 12 teachers of German as a foreign language at commercial and tourism schools learned new didactic methods. In three seminars, they developed project ideas that could be used in class instruction in all the schools and at the end of the last seminar gave presentations demonstrating how to implement them. The German teachers’ mini-projects had the objective of achieving understanding between ethic groups by way of class instruction in German as a foreign language.
