In close cooperation with the Albanian Ministry of Education, the National Agency for VET and other Albanian education institutions, KKA is implementing projects to support ongoing reforms in the fields of vocational education and training, gender equality at schools and German as a foreign language. KKA is also a member of the DACH Plus Group, an open forum for coordination, exchange of experience and cooperation between organisations working in the field of vocational education and training.
Key Focuses:
Vocational education and training in lower secondary and upper secondary schools (schools focussing on business, tourism or agriculture)
Gender sensitivity in teaching: secondary schools
Examples:
Gender Mainstreaming in Secondary Schools
The aim of the project is to introduce gender-sensitive teaching at Albanian secondary schools. In its first phase, the project supported the introduction of gender-sensitive teaching at five schools. On the basis of this experience, multipliers will be trained, who will then be available to the regional education authorities for the implementation of further training measures.
In the current phase (2009-2010), school teams from three academic secondary schools and two vocational schools participated in a series of workshops aimed at raising the awareness of the participants to the issue of gender mainstreaming and its implementation in the school context, and initial projects were carried out at the respective schools. The various school projects were also discussed with colleagues from the other participating schools in peer coaching sessions, in order to ensure an additional exchange of experience.
The second phase (2010-2011) centres on the mainstreaming of gender issues in the teaching/learning process. To this end, a focus is placed on the observation of and reflection on personal action in everyday practice as well as on the analysis and interpretation of interactions between teachers and students. As a final step, dedicated teachers on the school teams will be trained as multipliers.
ALBIZ – Supporting the Reform of Business Education at Secondary Schools
Through the project ALBIZ, KulturKontakt Austria supports the Albanian government in its aim to make business education at secondary schools more practice oriented, attractive and labour market relevant. In the context of the project, measures are being taken to enhance the quality and labour market relevance of business education at Albania’s 14 commercial schools. These measures include the revision of curricula and teaching materials, in-service training for teachers and the introduction of new forms of quality management at the school level.
ALBIZ also promotes communication and cooperation between schools and the business sector. For this purpose, the schools have designated specific staff members to intensify contacts with the business sector; each of these contact persons is being given advice and training by a business coach. ALBIZ also includes measures aimed at enhancing gender sensitivity in business education. The project, which was launched in 2009 and will continue through 2013, is financed by Austrian Development Cooperation and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture.
